The show was amazing. I have never seen a performance as magnificent as that before, it was truly wonderful. The actors were great (the woman who played Elphaba joined the touring cast straight from broadway), the costumes were amazing, and the story was beautiful.

As far as stories about witches go, this one was pretty good. The main theme of it was whether people are born wicked, or become wicked. Witchcraft itself was never portrayed negatively. Elphaba's spells turned out different from what she intended sometimes, and she sometimes could not control her powers. The former is particularly true when it comes to real witchcraft. It's so important to really think a spell through, as I'm sure most of you know, or things could turn out differently from what you wanted.

Overall, I will give this play an extremely positive review. It was truly amazing. I would strongly recommend it to witches, musical theatre lovers, and anyone else, really.

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Shameless Promotion.

I just wanted to take a moment to plug my other blog here, I don't think I have before. My other blog is called Bonbon de Sucre, it's a Gothic Lolita and historical fashion blog. I don't know if you know what Gothic Lolita is, but to briefly describe it; Gothic Lolita is a style of fashion that originated in japan. The idea is to dress sort of doll-like, a younger, innocent sort of look. It is heavily influenced by Rococo and Victorian fashion (which I also love). Think Alice in Wonderland meets Marie Antoinette meets Fairy tales. Here are a couple of pics:

These are some examples of Sweet, Gothic, and Classic Lolita, three of the main styles. Although Gothic Lolita shares a name with Vladimir Nabikov's novel, Lolita, they are not related. They way I understand it, the name Lolita was adopted by the Japanese when gothic Lolita first started, refering to a precocious young girl. It is not fetish, or meant to attract older men. It is simply a fashion style, for girls (and sometimes guys) who love the romantic, fairy tale look.

I also talk about historical fashion on my blog, as well as costuming (I'm going to post about the costumes from Wicked next), as well as crafts. I do lots of craft projects, and I usually post them there. The latest one I did was Victorian Silhouttes.

Check it out if you are interested in interesting fashions, or old-fashioned crafts. I am really looking forward to it. I got the tickets for Christmas from Nick's parents. My parents even pitched in to the evening by getting us a fancy hotel room!

I'm going to post a review after I get back. I'm always interested in how witches are portrayed in pop culture and the media, so this will be fun.

I'm not one of those people who gets all up in arms about movies like The Craft (which is actually one of my favorite movies), or shows like Charmed (a guilty pleasure of mine). I don't get easily offended by that type of thing. I do get offended if something talks about "evil wiccans" or portrays real life witches in a negative light, e.g. on the Mentalist. There was an episode of that show where a "wiccan" priestess performed a so called "killing spell" on the victim. Wiccans were portrayed as flaky weirdos who were practicing witchcraft for attention or to rebel against something. That I did not like.

So, my review of Wicked is coming soon!

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Blessed Imbolg/Camdlemas/Brigid's Day!!!

Hi everyone! I hope you are all having a very blessed Imbolg. I just wanted to drop a line to wish everyone well, and share some Imbolg info.

Imbolg or Candlemas is also called Brigid's Day by many people, in honor of the Celtic Goddess/ Catholic Saint. She is the matron of fire, smith-craft, healing, and poetry. She is also associated with childbirth. She is called Bride by some, and rules engagements, marriages, and handfastings.
You can honor her with prayer, offerings of white flowers, or making Brigid's crosses. You can make one by taking two equal length twigs, pieces of wood, or even Popsicle sticks, and forming an equal armed cross. Glue them together, and tie silver and white ribbons all around the middle.
The Domestic Witch has some interesting info about Imbolg on her blog. Her post cheered me up when I read something she said about weather:

"An old British rhyme tells us that “if Candlemas Day be bright and clear, there’ll be two winters in the year”. Actually, all of the cross-quarter days can be used as inverse weather predictors, whereas the quarter days are used as direct weather predictors."

It's grey and rainy today, with snow still all over the ground from this weekend. Snow is beautiful of course, and I honor, respect, and love all of the seasons, but I don't always *like* winter. I'll tell you, I'm a spring and summer gal, and I am looking forward to warm weather, hiking, drinking sweet tea, making my own sundresses, and blossoming plants. Ah, it sounds so good already...

But I digress. So check out The Domestic Witch. It's a really great blog, she has some great ideas.

Also, if you are interested, check out my other blog, Bonbon de Sucre. It is my blog for fashion and crafting. I am into Gothic and Lolita fashion, historical fashion, haute couture, Hime Gyaru fashion, Mori/Natural-kei, Fairy-kei, and whatever other fashion stuff I like(my tastes are obviously very ecclectic). I stopped Bonbon for a while, and have recently started it back up, with a sort of new mission.
I don't know if any of you will be interested in this, but I am also going to talk about crafting, as well as posting tutorials, for things like sewing, embroidery, crocheting, jewelry making, and Victorian/other historical crafts. So for all of you crafty witches, you might want to check it out.

Well I'm off for now. I'm going to go light one candle for each thing I want to manifest in the coming year, and meditate on it for a while.

I hope you have a very Happy Imbolg, and Blessed Be!
-Eirwen

A Good Cuppa Tea

I love tea. It can help you wake up in the morning or relax and fall asleep at night. Herbal teas can help with all kinds of things, medicinal and magical. Afternoon tea can be a great way to relax, socialize with friends, or just serve as an afternoon pick-me-up.
Afternoon tea started because the Duchess of Bedford, who was one of Queen Victoria's handmaidens, liked to have tea and finger food in the afternoon. This caught on, and soon afternoon tea became a traditional British custom. I am enchanted with the idea of afternoon tea. I wish that here in the US it would catch on, and afternoon tea would become a regular activity. I settle for taking tea whenever I can.
Here in the south, tea is a very different experience than British afternoon tea. We drink orange pekoe, ice cold, and very sweet. Sweet tea is delicious. It makes me think of home and summer, and lazy country days.
Herbal teas are great for lots of things. They can help fight colds, stomach aches, and many other health problems. They can also be used as a type of kitchen witch's potion. Teas for love, psychic awareness, protection, and health can all be made and used easily.
Below are recipes for British milk tea, southern sweet tea, as well as a few herbal tea recipes and their uses. I will also list some store bought teas that I like.

British Milk Tea:

First, you need a teapot, some milk (not cream), and a good black tea (loose or in bags).

I like Twinings Lady Gray tea. It's a black tea with a hint of bergamot, orange, and lemon. Traditional Earl Gray is also good, which is black tea with bergamot. English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast teas are also good for this.

Heat the water until completely boiling. If you are using a kettle, you will know when the kettle starts to whistle. Pour the water into the teapot right away, over the tea. Let it steep for a minute or so, and then add a bit of milk directly into the teapot, until it is a creamy tan color. Be careful not to add too much milk, or you will dilute the tea too much. Serve hot, with sugar as desired.

Southern Sweet Tea

You will need three or four family sized tea bags (Luzianne, Lipton, or whatever brand you like), a pinch of baking soda, and about 2 cups of sugar. You can use more or less sugar, depending on how sweet you want it.

Boil about four cups of water. When it is steaming hot, pour it into a gallon pitcher and add the tea bags. Add a small pinch of baking soda (this takes out some of the bitterness). Let it steep for about 15 minutes. Take out the tea bags. Add the sugar, and stir it in completely. The water should still be warm enough for it to kind of melt. Fill the rest of the pitcher with cold water. Put it in the refrigerator and cool. Serve cold, over ice. Add some lemon wedges, or sprigs of mint if you like.

Herbal Tea

There are so many kinds of herbal tea. You can serve them hot or cold, sweet or unsweet. I'm going to list some herbs that are good in teas, and their purposes:

Rose (Rose petals with black or green tea are a good aphrodisiac)
Damiana (also an aphrodisiac)
Ginger (for love)
Licorice (love)
Chamomile (sleep/meditation)
Peppermint (sleep/healing/purification)
Blackberry (healing)
Echinacia (strengthening spells)

There are many others that I don't have the time or space to list.

Some good medicinal herbal teas are:

Echinacia (colds/flu/coughs)
Chamomile (insomnia)
Peppermint (stomachaches)
Ginger (stomachaches)

I found this recipes while I was googling, and I wanted to share it, it sounds really yummy:

Lemon Balm tea for Midsummer/Litha ( http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/lithacooking/r/LemonBalmTea.htm )

2 Cups lemon balm leaves, fresh
Honey or other sweetener
Water

Preparation:

Bring 2 quarts water to a boil, and add the leaves. Reduce heat and allow to steep for about 15 minutes. Strain leaves out, and then add honey or other sweetener to taste. If the tea is too strong, add a bit of water to thin it out. Pour into an ice-filled pitcher and serve. You may want to add a sprig of mint for garnish.

Some Teas I like:

Herbal:

Sleepytime (Celestial Seasonings)
Chamomile (any brand)
Peppermint (any brand)
Moroccan Mint (Numi Tea)

Green:

Jasmine Green (Numi Tea)
Gunpowder Green (Numi Tea)
Decaf Honey Chamomile (Celestial Seasonings)

Black:

Earl Gray (Twinings)
Lady Gray (Twinings)
English Breakfast (Twinings)
Irish Breakfast (Twinings)
Chai Spice (any brand)

Red:

Luminous Lemon Rooibos (Zhena's Gypsy Tea)

White:

Pure White (Twinings)

One last note:

Black, Green, White, and Red tea are all very good (at least I like them all.) Green tea in particular is very healthy, and full of anti-oxidants. Tea can be good for your health and well-being, as well as being a tasty treat. Try drinking a cup of tea before or after meditation, ritual, or spellwork.

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Sources:

http://www.spiritualworld.co.za/herbs/magicalusesofherbs.htm
http://www.erasofelegance.com/etiquette/tea.html
http://lolita-charm.blogspot.com/2008/08/art-of-western-tea-ceremony.html
http://www.grits.com/tea.htm
http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/lithacooking/r/LemonBalmTea.htm
http://www.celestialseasonings.com/
http://www.twiningsusa.com/
http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ExecMacro/numitea/home.d2w/report
http://www.gypsytea.com/

Quick Update: Pound for Pound Challenge

This is a really cool thing, and it's unrelated, but I really want to post it here. It's called the Pound for Pound Challenge. For every pound you pledge to loose, they donate 14 cents (enough to buy a pound of food) to Feeding America, a hunger awareness charity that donates food to your local food bank. I pledged to loose 50 pounds (which will put me at 186, which is still a lot). So, check it out if you are interested!

I really want to be healthier. So, I haven't posted in months, I realize that. I just finished my last semester at community college, and I have my Associate in Arts degree! Yay! So, I was really busy finishing up my last semester, and I got distracted away from my blog, but I really want to get back to it. So, I thought tonight would be a good night to post something. It's a Blue Moon tonight, the second full moon in a month. It's interesting that it falls on not only the eve of a new year, but the eve of a new decade.
I'm not doing any ritual work tonight, just spending time with loved ones. This could be a good night for ritual work though. Be careful however, because Mercury is in retrograde right now. So if you do any spellwork in the next few weeks, make sure that your intent is very clear, so that nothing gets all confused. Mercury rules communication and travel, so clarity and safety are important right now.
Recently, I bought a copy of the Tao Te Ching, and I am very interested in it. I've decided to start studying it. The book is split into numbered passages, which are very short. Each week, until I'm finished, I'm going to read, study, and meditate on one passage from the Tao Te Ching. My intent is to learn from it, and hopefully understand how to apply some Taoist wisdom to my path of Hedgecraft and Natural/Kitchen/Green Witchery.
I will try to post every week about my ideas and meditations, and if anyone wants to read and study along with me, that would be great! If you are interested in doing an online Tao Te Ching for pagans/witches study group, please contact me at eirwenmoon@yahoo.com

I hope everyone has a Happy New Year!

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Herb of the Month (October): Elder/ Elderberry

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 306px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_DuwUmennAo0/St-_bHSe4oI/AAAAAAAAABY/vJGvlvGKfxA/s320/elderberry_fruit_01_opt.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5395241351147086466" />
Elderberry
sambucus
(sambucas nigra, sambucus canadensis, sambucus laciniata, sambucus racemona)
Element: water
Ruling planet: Venus
Sacred to: the Mother Goddess
Used for: exorcism, protection healing, prosperity, sleep.

Elder goes by many folk names, such as trom (the Irish name) Frau Holle (German), Old Lady, Yakori bengeskro ("devil's eye" in Romany), and Lady Ellhorn, to name a few.
Elder sap is red like blood, and it has been though that elder trees are home to spirits. When cutting a piece of elder, a witch or folk healer would say:

"Lady Ellhorn, give me of thy wood,
And I will give thee of mine,
When I become a tree."

It is sometimes associated with grief. In Christian tradition, Judas Iscariot was said to have hanged himself on an Elder tree.

It is used to ward off demons and negative spirits, as well as protect against sorcery or spells against you.
Hang it over your door to protect the home.
It has been used in burial rites in Britain, and is sometimes used to protect the dead on their journey into the afterlife.

The flowers are used for wine, cordial, flavor syrups, ice cream, and Sambuca, an Italian liqueur.

Medicinally, ederberry is used for fevers, coughs, colds, and sore throats, among other things. (I recently took elderberry lozenges for a very sore throat, and they helped alot, and tasted really yummy.)

Certain people, including some Gypsies, think that it is bad luck to burn elder wood, so it is never used in a campfire.
Elder is very popular for wands and flutes. Scott Cunningham says "Make flutes from the branches and call forth spirits with their music. Best done at midnight in a deserted place far from the haunts of humans".

Ruis (elder) in the Celtic tree calendar is from November 25 to December 22. Each tree in the calendar corresponds to a line from "The Song of Amergin", which purportedly comes from the Chief bard of the Milesians when they invaded Ireland circa 1268 C.E. The line "I am a wave of the Sea" corresponds to Ruis/elder.

I hope that you found this helpful, I certainly learned a lot about elder when researching it! I want to make my own elder wand, and dedicate it to the Mother Goddess. I can't wait for Samhain! I am currently working on compiling some purification techniques for a hardcore Samhain purification. I love a good purification, it always feels so good!

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Bibliography:

Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs by Scott Cunningham

"What is the Celtic Tree Calendar?" by Linda Kerr
http://www.faeriefaith.net/treecal.html

The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl

The Ultimate Herb Book by Antony Atha

The White Goddess by Robert Graves

October: The Month of the Witch

Hey everyone. I know that I completely missed September, it's really hard to keep up with this blog when I have classes. I'm not abandoning this blog though. Octobers Herb of the Month will be posted by the 21st. I have a few thing I want to discuss though.

For those of you that read NewWitch and/or PanGaia magazines, you may be wondering what happened to them. I suppose that they just weren't making enough money to continue, so they have both closed down, unfortunately. The good news is that the people from the two magazines have come together and created a new magazine that is sort of a combination of the two, called Witches and Pagans. It is available at this website: http://www.bbimedia.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=488&zenid=c5eb6d261149d7af8088e47c0a60f90d

In my town, October is officially Earth Religions Awareness Month. There seems to be at least one event every week. Although I don't go to many of them (I'm a bit introverted), I am glad to be blessed with the opportunity to discover more about paganism and earth religions. So many people live in areas where coming out of the broom closet could cause them to be ostracized or even put them in danger. The only resources they have are books and the internet, and don't know any other pagans. Until pretty recently, there weren't that many books, much less the internet! I just want to thank God and Goddess for the wonderful pagan community I have here.

October is my favorite month, ever since I was a little kid. Witches, magic, and the unknown surround us this time of year. So soak up the mystical energy that is October, honor the God and Goddess, your ancestors, and the darkness. Prepare for the turning of the wheel. Samhain is a great day to cleanse your home. I plan on cleansing my home, in both the mundane sense, and cleansing any negative energy that could be lingering.
On the upcoming new moon, I plan on taking down my altar, and setting a new one up on Samhain. I will put up new candles and a new cloth, cleansing and reconsecrating my tools, and preparing all of my items for the new year.

My homework for you this month is to purge lingering negativity and clutter. Get rid of old magazines, sweep and mop the floors, smudge your home often. Meditate, let the negative energy flow out of you, channeling it into the earth to be recycled. Think about bad behaviors or things you want to get rid of (smoking, old grudges, etc.) and make a resolution to change things. The darkness can be powerful for looking within and finding out what you feel that you need to change. Cleanse your home and yourself, and you will go into the new year feeling refreshed.

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Blessed Mabon!

Hi, I just wanted to drop in quickly and wish everyone a happy autumn equinox. With mercury in retrograde right now, things have been a little crazy, and I know that I need to take a step back and honor the earth, and I'm sure some of you do as well. This is a good day for giving thanks to the Lord and Lady, and welcoming the dark half of the year (whether we want it to come or not, lol). Use the time from now until Samhain to accept, love, and embrace the dark aspect, and to mentally, physically, and spiritually prepare yourself for the dark. Today is a great day for meditation and introspection.
Have a blessed Mabon everyone!
Blessed Be,
Eirwen

999

So, I had to post something today, 9/9/09. I've heard a lot of takes on it, I've heard some people say that it doesn't or shouldn't have significance because the calendar is man-made. I think that it has as much significance as you want it to have. All things that have significance do so because we make it so. We assigned attributes to the number nine in the first place, or the number three (the triple goddess, the holy trinity, etc). I believe that numbers, words, symbols, have great power, because we give them power, both mystical and mundane. Think about the swastika. It is originally found in Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain images, as a symbol for well being. Now, it is associated with hate, violence, racism, terror, and genocide. The meaning of the symbol changed, because of human influence.
My point is, all symbols, words, numbers, etc are meaningful if you want them to be. So, if 999 is meaningful to you, then great. If it isn't, that's ok too.
9 is my favorite number, because it consists of three sets of three. So 999 is three sets of three sets of three. So I like to think of today as good luck, because my favorite numbers are in alignment. So I'm going to draw on that good luck energy, and use it to increase my happiness, health, and prosperity.
Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Harvest Moon

Hello everyone! I hope that you all had a wonderful Harvest moon! This month's full moon was in Pisces, and that usually makes me feel a little crazy, but this year it was strangely calming. Last night, I cooked for Nick and my parents. It was great, I made oven fried chicken breasts and homemade broccoli mac and cheese (and brownies, but those were from a mix). I really enjoyed cooking for them, because I like to see people happy when they have good food. I really felt (and continue to feel) thankful for my family, and for the comfort and love that I have. It was a really great night, I felt so grounded and safe. Ironically, I never did look at the moon last night, which is kind of funny. It doesn't matter though, it was a good night, and I feel like I'm prepared for Mabon and the dark half of the year. Last year, I think I tried to push the darkness away (for some reason), and pined for spring the whole time. I enjoyed my spring and summer, but I guess I'm not dreading the fall this year.
I am going to go and harvest the last of my herbs in the next few days, and then dry them, and get ready for the cold. September's herb of the month is going to be coming up soon, this month it is Chamomile. I would love suggestions for October, so let me know if you want me to feature anything specific.
I hope that you feel blessed as the first leaves of autumn fall down from the trees.
Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Hermes and the Golden Cattle

This is one of my favorite Greek myths, and I wanted to share it with everyone. I have always liked Hermes. He's a trickster, but he is good-natured for the most part, and unlike most of the other Greek gods and goddesses, he is said to care about the individual lives of mortals.

Hermes was the son of Zeus, and the nymph Maia (one of the Pleiades and the child of Atlas). He was born in secret (so that Hera, Zeus' jealous wife would not find out), on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. When he was born, Maia wrapped him in cloth, and exhausted, fell asleep. Hermes, although a newborn, was very intelligent and cunning. He broke free from his clothes, and ran off. He finally came to Thessaly, and found the golden cattle of Apollo. Hermes stole the herd of cattle, and made his way back to Mount Cyllene. On his way back, he killed a tortoise and removed it's shell. He took the shell, and the intestines of one of the cattle, and created the first lyre.
In the morning, Apollo saw that his herd was missing, and being a god, knew that it was Hermes who had stolen his cattle. He went to Mount Cyllene to confront Hermes. Zeus was called to judge Hermes' actions. While Apollo told Zeus what had occurred, and the trial went on, Hermes began to play his lyre. Apollo, who is the God of music, was enthralled by the beautiful sound of the lyre. He then made a deal with Hermes. Apollo agreed to let Hermes keep the cattle in exchange for the lyre.

I always loved this story. I like the idea that the beauty of art or music can cause people to put their differences aside. That is one of the things that I take away from this myth.

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

Thanks to my readers!

To all my readers,

Thanks you so much for following my blog. I have not been meditating at all lately, and I am trying to get back into practice with it. I had trouble concentrating, I couldn't get comfortable, I was unable to relax into the meditation. So, I've decided to go about re-training myself as if I were a beginner. However, I have learned a few things over my 9 years of studying and practicing the craft, so this time I am more prepared. On this note, I want to share my meditation tips, either for beginners of for those who are out of practice and want to get into meditation again.

1. Try guided meditations. I find these very helpful, and I still used them all the time when I meditated on my own. I know that cd's and mp3's cost money, but luckily there are many good guided meditation podcasts available for free on iTunes. I personally enjoy Wynyfryd's Meditation Room and Meditation Oasis. These guided meditations can provide structure and can help you focus and concentrate. You can also learn techniques that you might want to use in your own personal meditations.

2. Practice often. Practice makes perfect, and the more often you meditate, the better at it you get. When you are used to meditating often, you will be better able to fall into a meditative state. This can help with other aspects of your craft too.

3. Keep a journal. This can be tedious, but it really helps. Write in it even if you can't concentrate and you don't really meditate. You can find connections, like maybe you have more trouble concentrating if you meditate before work, or if your best meditations happen in the afternoon. It is also a good place to keep a record of any spirit guide meetings or astral journeys that happen.

4. Consider mantras. Find a personal mantra to chant either aloud or mentally, or use one that already exists. Om (Aum) is a powerful sound that can aid in meditation and deep breathing. You can also try using a pagan song or chant, such as "We All Come From the Goddess" or "Isis, Astarte, Diana..."

5. Set the mood. Try different kinds of music, candles, incense, etc. (since you will most likely have your eyes closed, be careful to observe fire safety precautions). Find some things that work for you. I enjoy listening to Enigma when I'm meditating. You can find some wonderful music at import stores (I have one that I bought in an Indian import store that has some eastern music themes and a techno beat).

6. Learn what works for you. As always, use your intuition. Try different things, and you will learn what you like, and how you prefer to meditate.

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

August Herb of the Month: Apple Mint

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_DuwUmennAo0/SoOnfWiCfcI/AAAAAAAAABQ/p5RXrEzpgDo/s320/apple+mint+1007088.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5369319337821896130" />
Element: Air
Ruling Planet: Mercury
Sacred to: Hades (Pluto), Hecate
Used for: Money/Prosperity, Lust, Healing, Travel, Exorcism, Protection, Attracting Good Spirits.

Magickally as well as medicinally, apple mint is used for pretty much the same purposes as other mints.

It is grown as an ornamental plant (look at the pretty green and white leaves!), and used in jellies and teas, and some recipes (see below for a recipe for Apple Mint Couscous).

All mints are sacred to Mintha (Mentha, Menthe). Mintha was a nymph, who fell in love with Hades, and he loved her as well. Persephone (his wife) became jealous, and trampled Mintha, killing her. (In some versions, Demeter, Persephone's mother, is the one to kill Mintha). Hades was saddened by the death of his love, and he raised her up as the first mint plant.

Apple mint can be used to fight headaches, and calm stomach problems. It is often eaten or drunk in teas. It can also be used in a balm to soothe muscle pains.

Worn around the wrist, mint protects against bad health.

To attract money, place or rub a few mint leaves in your purse or wallet.

To expel evil, sprinkle salt water with sprigs of mint, rosemary, and marjoram.

Place it on the altar to attract good spirits, it is extremely useful for this purpose.

Keep some apple mint close to you for protection, prosperity, good health, and to attract good spirits to your home and hearth.

Apple Mint Couscous:

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; I would talk about the same kind of things that I talk about here, but I would have different shows devoted to different topics. I would like to interview people as well. I know some wonderful people who might want to be interviewed. So my few but wonderful readers, what do you think? Comment on this post, or write me at eirwenmoon@yahoo.com

On another topic, the Mother Grove, a Goddess temple in my area has been recently given official non-profit church status!!! This is such a wonderful thing. They have yet to get their own land, so light a candle or say a blessing for them! I had a very hectic school semester as well.

The other day, I went hiking with my boyfriend Nick. We hiked up to see some local waterfalls. I am very out of shape, and it was about a three mile hike to the bottom of the falls (we didn't go to the very top, because it is very difficult terrain, and for more advanced hikers). I almost gave up, but I pushed myself just a little harder, and I made it. It was so incredibly beautiful there. I felt so peaceful there. There were butterflies everywhere! Different kinds, tiny purple ones, large yellow ones, and a medium sized blue one. I told Nick (who is very rational minded) that maybe the fae were there, and he smiled. It was amazing, seeing those different kind of butterflies all gathering there. Nick and I went for a swim in a small pool below the falls. The water was frigid, but it felt good on sore muscles. I felt the energy of Mother Gaia all around me. I felt like I could have stayed in Her waters forever, but after a while we gathered our things and walked back down the mountain. I felt so amazing, and I was glad to share the experience with Nick.
I love living in the mountains so much.

I hope that everyone had a blessed Lammas!

Blessed Be,
Eirwen

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hedgewitchsgarden.blogspot.com/2009/08/im-back-also-waterfalls-0.html' title='I'm back! I should be graduating next next winter! So I have more time for other stuff, even though I go back to school next week, sigh... I haven't found much about apple mint, but my herbalist friend tells me that it has the same medicinal uses as any other kind of mint, so I would imagine it has similar magickal uses as well. I'll post more about that soon.
Things are finally getting warmer here, so I am starting to feel the transition from air to fire. As a fire sign (Aries), this is always a pleasant time of year for me. I am looking forward to hiking in the woods and feeling the warmth of the sun. My boyfriend and I are going to go hiking very soon, so that will be great.
I got my first cauldron the other day, and I am so excited. I am looking forward to some sigil burning this coming New Moon. I love the cleansing properties of fire for banishing negative behaviors. (I am quite overweight, and I'm finally working on changing that).
I think the fire energy is much needed this year, not just for me. So many people I know feel totally drained after last year, and I think the summer is going to rekindle some good energy.
Blessed Be.

New Herbs

I got some new herbs for my garden today! I got some chamomile, fennel, and apple mint. I have never heard of apple mint before, but I'll learn. That's part of the fun, bumbling along my path, learning how to grow and use herbs by trial and error (not too much error though, I'm careful about learning which ones are poisonous!). I'm excited about the chamomile especially, I love chamomile tea and I can't wait to drink tea that I grew! I am going to look up apple mint. That's going to be my herb of the month. I will pick a new one every month, and talk about the medicinal and magickal properties of it, the history and lore, as well as what kind of tasty food stuffs you can make with it! I mostly made it so I could comment on my classmate's blog, but then I decided that it would be more fun than myspace or something. I am so sick of myspace. On that note, my myspace user name is marichan869
So welcome to the Hedge Witch's Garden! (Thats me, your friendly neighborhood Hedge Witch.) What is a hedge witch, you ask?

Well, there are two kinds of Hedge Witches, and sometimes the two kinds overlap

(These are my ideas of what a hedge witch is, and no one can really agree on the exact definition.)

The first kind of hedge witch is similar to a shaman. They do work with the other realms of existance, like the astral realm, the underworld, faerieland, etc. They communicate with spirits and do divinations.

The other kind of hedge witch is more of a kitchen witch. They use herb lore, cooking, potions, fae energy, low magick (by low magick I mean magick that isn't heavily ceremonial, not that it is not as good or effective.) and work healing magick, protection, and divination (like tarot or scrying). Midwifery and herbalism are practices associated with hedge witchcraft. Some of these witches are craftswomen and men. Home, hearth, and garden are important. Some of these witches prefer the term Green Witch.

Most hedge wtiches fall somewhere inbetween these categories.

I draw mostly from the latter category. I use herbs, cooking and potions. I would call myself a Hedge Witch, also a Green Witch or a Kitchen Witch. I mostly work healing and protection magick, but I do a little divination. I work with the fae spirits, elemental magick, and I do astral projection and spirit guide communication. My practices are heavily celtic wicca-based, but I also draw from ancient greek philosophy, hoodoo, native american religion, shinto, buddhism, taoism, and hinduism. I am also a craftswoman, I made woodcrafts, leathercrafts, I sew, I do cross stich, etc.

My craft and my religion are tied together (although not all hedge witches share the same beliefs.) I believe in the Mother Goddess and the Father God.

I'm going to post spells, charms, recipes, poems, prayers, chants, or just whatever I'm feeling at the time.

Blessed Be!
